Writing Samples - Fall 2013 cont.

Nature was on my side

I saw it out of the corner of my eye but as usual I decided to ignore him. May 20, 2008. It was the perfect day in spring. I was pulling back into my high school parking lot after I went off campus to get lunch with my boyfriend James. All of my windows were open, Rascal Flatts was blasting from the speakers and I could feel the sun against my skin.
The time between the gun-shot sound of my airbag coming straight towards my face and the time of opening my eyes while lying on my back in the grass, was all a blur. I no longer cared about the sun against my skin, or the fact that it was a perfect day in spring.
No words can describe how terrifying the sound of an airbag coming out after the impact of hitting the guy driving the car I spotted, and stupidly ignored, speeding through the parking lot when I first pulled back on to campus.
I immediately let go of my steering wheel but luckily for me James grabbed it and straightened the car out. If it wasn’t for him I would’ve seen the bright blue sky above my head as my car could have potentially flipped over and landed on our track.
Through the shock of my first car accident and the ringing sound piercing through my ears, I managed to get myself unbuckled and out of the car. I lay down on the lawn next to my nearly totaled car and opened my eyes as I heard the sirens of an ambulance and the school nurse asking if I was okay.
My adrenaline was pumping so fast and I was so worried about James that I didn’t even notice the blood at first. The airbag had left me with a scraped up and burnt left arm.
Nature was definitely on my side that day because if it wasn’t for the hot pink sunglasses I had on my face trying to keep the gorgeous sun out of my eyes, I most definitely would’ve broken my nose according to the EMT who wrapped up my arm.
