Black.
Getting a phone call from my parents
saying they were going to visit you in the hospital. I asked what was wrong;
they said you just didn’t feel well. My parents said I had nothing to worry
about, until I signed onto facebook the next morning. I found out from a
Facebook status from my cousins in California – the pain began. Quickly called
my parents, they confirmed the horrible news. I bought my ticket for the bus
ride home. I walked through the double doors to find a room filled with black. The site of sad faces and wet
eyes was everywhere I looked. A day before your ninety-eighth birthday. Every
family member of ours, dressed in black.
Gathered together to celebrate your life, and tell you that we will all see you
soon. The next morning as we all climbed into our car and followed one another
to the cemetery, we were all standing in a group, arms linked together. An
employee of the funeral home was handing out brightly colored flowers from one
of the flower arrangements someone had made in your memory. We all got our
chance to go up to the grave and say our last goodbyes. I laid down my rainbow
rose, and said “I will see you soon Biz-Nonno.”
